Paths of Transcendence – a solo exhibition by Safdar Ali Qureshi
18th September, 2024
1X1 Art Gallery, Unit 10, Alserkal Avenue, Dubai
Safdar Ali Qureshi, a visionary contemporary artist, is set to unveil his first solo exhibition in Dubai. Qureshi employs the techniques of Impressionism, characterised by bold, repetitive brushstrokes and unblended, vibrant colours on wasli paper. Each piece layers and merges these elements to create evocative new imagery that captures the chaotic beauty and resilience of nature in the face of destruction.
Qureshi’s miniature paintings are an intricate dance of countless short marks that, when layered and superimposed, form swirling, almost cosmic patterns. His unique approach to line work transcends the classical role of defining form or emotion, instead creating complex, airy compositions that evoke both the simplicity and intricacy of our modern, interconnected world. These works reflect a generational familiarity with complexity,
using abstraction to mirror the dense, multi-layered nature of contemporary life.
Viewed from a distance, his works appear as dynamic, swirling shapes, but upon closer inspection, they reveal an extraordinary density of meticulously placed lines, challenging the eye to decipher their structure. These abstract 'notations'; capture fragments of everyday reality, encouraging viewers to draw from their own experiences through these carefully ordered yet playful compositions. His art engages both the imagination and intellect, offering a compelling exploration of complexity through rhythm, abstraction, and lightness.
Safdar Ali Qureshi's work is not only a reflection of the physical devastation but also a deep, personal response to the memories etched in his mind. With this body of work, he invites viewers to witness the emotional and environmental aftermath of devastating floods in Sindh, offering a powerful commentary on the intersection of nature, humanity, and memory.
